The skin represents our barrier to external threats. It has the unique characteristics of being ‘permeable to the good’ and ‘impermeable to the bad’. Also, it prevents water loss and protects against chemical and mechanical damage and pathogenic microorganisms. This barrier function takes place thanks to a sophisticated structure, mainly composed of lipids. These lipids are mostly ceramides, which require polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) to be produced.
If the barrier function is impaired, excessive water loss takes place and conditions like skin dryness, itching, eczema and dermatitis may occur, resulting in unhealthy skin which has lost its primary defense function. In order to restore the skin barrier, it is essential to supply skin with essential PUFA.
PUFA has also been reported to play a role in decreasing the hair fiber permeability, hence protecting the hair structure.
Omegablue is an upcycled active ingredient from bilberry seeds, containing the essential fatty acids crucial for the formation of our skin barrier like linoleic acid and linolenic acid. These essential fatty acids are also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA).
De bilberry seeds are obtained as a by-product of a major extraction of anthocyanins from the fruit skin and pulp. Once extracted, the fruits are separated from the seeds, that still contain the precious PUFA, and the seeds are extracted by CO2 to maximize these essential compounds.

When applied to the skin in cosmetic formulations, Omegablue improves hydration and skin barrier functionality.
Due to the fact that it contains essential PUFA, relevant for the anti-inflammatory cascade, Omegablue also acts in effectively soothing challenged skin: it contains sebum-like essential fatty acids forming a protective barrier from external agents.
On hair, Omegablue peforms an anti-fragility effect and the hair fibre becomes less permeable.
