Aging brings into play several physiological processes which modify and alter the skin’s functions and structures. These are induced by extrinsic factors, such as UV radiation and pollution, but also intrinsic factors specific to each individual. All cutaneous structures are affected by these changes, from the epidermis to the hypodermis.
The hypodermis, the deepest layer of the skin, undergoes changes in its structure. The quality and quantity of adipose tissue in the body, also in the face, changes with age. Adipocytes, the cells constituting this tissue, are particularly affected by these transformations. Facial morphology changes and imbalance of volume is observed, with sagging of the skin visible in the lower part of the face, loss of firmness, hollows beneath the eyes: the Adip’aging concept. The dermis and epidermis, the outermost structures, also undergo age-related changes. Cell communication and cell metabolism become slower, with weakened structural cohesion. Wrinkles and fine lines start to appear, as a result of these changes.
